How to correct a "rundll" error message?

What does the following error message mean and how can it be fixed?

Rundll has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL

Rundll will now close

This question was answered on March 24, 2005. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.


This problem can occur if the "drivers=mmsystem.dll" line is missing from the [boot] section of the System.ini file

The correct this problem do the following:

1 Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to edit the System.ini file

2 Add the following line to the [boot] section of the file:

drivers=mmsystem.dll

3 Save and then close the System.ini file

4 Restart your computer.
